Although GripShift isn’t a new release in the gaming scene, its recent migration from the PSP over to the Xbox Live Arcade deserves to be greeted with some good old-fashioned Kiwi enthusiasm. Developed back in 2005 by New Zealand’s own Sidhe Interactive, GripShift is a puzzle/platform racing game, similar to a blend of Wacky Racers, Skyroads and Micro Machines. Battle-racing car puzzler might sound like an overstuffed description of a game, but that is exactly what the overly ambitious Live Arcade title Gripshift sets out to be. Sadly, it does everything just well enough to function, without ever excelling at one area. It is light on battle, light on racing, and extremely light on puzzles, leaving gamers feeling a bit lighter in the MS Points pocketbook without much replayability to show for it. Read more
The developers may have been aware that the game's puzzle element wasn't enough on its own to keep gamers hooked for long because they also added a multiplayer Mario Kart style feature. The tracks in this mode are designed to be circuits and your goal is to each the finish line first. As long as you understand going in (play the demo) that Gripshift is not a racing game (at least not in single player) you'll find that you're getting a great, fun, and intense puzzle/platformer with an amount of content that is equal to any retail game (which makes sense considering it's also a PSP title).
