Review Summary

The concept of BioShock is unique and well conceived. It features a great number of unique RPG elements and powers. The situation is in 1959 and you play the role of Jack, on board a plane that goes down in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Your mission is to come out of the danger. The best part of the game is that when you are killed, you don’t have to start all over again, instead you are transferred into the last known regeneration chamber you passed, keeping all the items you have, and enemies also …

The concept of BioShock is unique and well conceived. It features a great number of unique RPG elements and powers. The situation is in 1959 and you play the role of Jack, on board a plane that goes down in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Your mission is to come out of the danger. The best part of the game is that when you are killed, you don’t have to start all over again, instead you are transferred into the last known regeneration chamber you passed, keeping all the items you have, and enemies also retain the same attributes they had when you were killed. Thus you can continue from where you left off, but you are just thrown in another location. You can lure enemies into traps that you either set yourself or manipulate. You can use plasmids to set foes on fire, causing them to run into a pool of water to extinguish the flames, and then electrify the pool. You can catch projectiles with telekinesis and throw them back, or you can hack turrets and lead enemy their way. You can even get a Big Daddy to protect you and obliterate any enemy that threatens you. As you progress you unlock a wide assortment of Plasmids. The music enhances the setting and period of the game, visuals are very detailed. Most reviewers find this game to be authentic and players will find themselves fully immersed in this experience and will want to play again and again.

Bioshock unfortunately just misses out on that special 10/10 score, but still manages to engulf us in a world like no other. Rapture is a beautifully stylised city that provides plenty of mystery and intrigue. Definitely a game of the year contender. Read more

I can’t do anything except advising this game to everyone, but most of all to the shooter genre lovers or to who is looking for a good plot, as it’s just what BioShock offers. The title’s not perfect, but it certainly has a lot to offer, a very good longevity and an excellent setting. For the survival horror genre lovers, instead, I see that they may not exactly find what they’re looking for (even if it is an extraordinary experience) as the game doesn’t scare... Read more

And with that out of the way, all that remains is to insist that anyone with a PC or a 360 goes out and buys this wonderful game on the 24th of August (or sooner if you happen to live near the street date-breaking US retailers), and send a message to the entire games industry that is the kind of game that people want. BioShock is the ultimate rarity: not only does it live up to its lofty promise, but exceeds it through simple, old fashioned talent and imagination - not... Read more

  3. Bioshock review (Xbox 360)

After all the hype of Gears of Whatsit, seeing similar ‘Best Thing Evah’ praise being heaped on Bioshock made me deeply suspicious. Gears was an immense disappointment for me (and many others), so I was more than a little nervous when I started playing Bioshock. I need not have been worried. It’s nowhere near as bad as Gears. However… Bioshock is not going to change your life, folks, sorry. It’s a masterpiece, for sure, but it is a flawed one. I agree entirely... Read more
