The modem allows users to share files, printers, hard drive space, and other resources by connecting their computers to the Gateway using the built-in 4-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch. Four wired PCs can be attached directly or more hubs can be added to extend the network to as large as the user desires. There is also the option of using the built-in Access Point to connect wireless devices to the current network. The Access Point, which is built into the Gateway, uses the latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N’s "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Apart from that, MIMO utilizes signal reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. This maintains the wireless connection much farther than standard Wireless-G. In addition to this, users get an advantage in speed as they move further away from the device. It is compatible with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the Gateway has the capacity to increase the throughput to a higher than normal level by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds far faster than standard Wireless-G. Besides that, Wireless-N can enable a double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices. With this function, users can connect to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbour" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devoices present in the area before mo0nopolizing the radio band. What’s more, the WAG160N protects the user’s privacy and network by use of a 256-bit industrial-strength encryption and 802.1x authentication and authorization. Linksys has also installed a powerful SPI firewall to protect computers against intruders and most known Internet attacks.
