The D-link DIR-655 is known as the D-Link Xtreme N™ Gigabit Router. It is a draft 2.0 802.11n compliant device that has 14 times faster speeds and 6 times farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g devices. When it is connected to a cable or a DSL modem, the user will have access to high speed Internet service to multiple computers and game consoles as well as a secure wireless network for sharing of photos, files and music, among others. The router has dimensions of 4.6" x 7.6" x 1.2" (Width x Depth x Height). It weighs 0.7 pounds.
The router is powered by Xtreme N™ technology and comes with three external antennas. It is suitable for users that require a large coverage of wireless network for houses or offices or if they are running bandwidth-intensive applications. The DIR-655 also includes a 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch that connects Gigabit wired devices, contributing to lag-free network gaming and faster file transfers. In terms of security, the DIR-655 uses WPA and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access). In addition to that, it has advanced firewall features such as Network Address Translation (NAT), Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) as well as VPN Pass-through / Multi-sessions PPTP / L2TP / IPSec. The minimum system requirements for the computer it can be installed in are Windows Vista™, Windows® XP SP2 or Mac OS® X (v10.4), Internet Explorer® v6 or Mozilla® Firefox® v1.5, CD-ROM Drive and a network interface card. For internet access, the router requires a cable or DSL modem and a subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Among its features are intelligent QoS technology prioritizes both wired and wireless Internet traffic to enable enhanced gaming and phone calling (VoIP) experience as well as virtually no wireless dead spots. Also, it has E-mail notification for triggered events. It has a one year limited warranty.

Wireless performance still remains unimpressive but the DIR-655 is offering a lot for your money. In our view, if you want the best wireless performance and Gigabit ports to boot then Netgear’s WRN854T is the one to go for but if you want superior features then choose D-Link. Read more
