Users are allowed to select the recording mode from five modes available, as preferred. The length of time that users can record depends on the mode being chosen. They can record up to 374 hours 55 minutes if they select LP mode. SP mode offers the recording time of 140 hours 35 minutes whereas ST mode provides 46 hours 5 minutes. STLP and STHQ mode allows users to record for about 88 hours 45 minutes and 17 hours 25 minutes, respectively. Two AAA batteries are needed to power the device. It has the battery life of 29 hours for recording and 18.5 hours for playback. The voice recorder has built-in 15mm diameter loudspeaker.
With Digital Voice Editor Software that is supplied together with the Sony ICD-SX78 sound files are convertible to universal WAVE/ MP3 format. Its backlit dot-matrix LCD comes with ID3 tag where MP3 files that include it displays the track information such as title and artist. Users are allowed to edit it on any PC or Macintosh computer. LPEC voice data compression is featured with the device. It is a high quality audio codec that is used to convert audio voice signals to digital format, as developed by Sony. Besides that, Triple Rate Codec voice data compression is featured as well. Users can manipulate the playback speed of their voice file without changing its pitch with the Digital Pitch Control (DPC) feature.
