Both digital Freeview and standard analogue tuners have also been integrated into the stylishly glossed and bold design being encased in a dark lacquered uniform, it is undeniably striking but can be equally imposing in cramped spaces. The screen’s oversized construction, which also accommodates a pair of permanently mounted speakers, is comparatively weighty as compared to similar-sized models. It arrives supported by an unsteady, swiveling pedestal stand, though basic wall-mounting options are also provided.
The sleek front panel is entirely devoid of controls, which are all neatly concealed across the screen’s underside to preserve its uncluttered appearance. Also out of sight, on the side of the screen, is a pair of memory-card slots that can accept up to nine different card formats for easy access of information from digital devices like cameras, MP3 players and handheld organisers. Hidden on the opposite side is the standard set of AV inputs that can be used to grant easy access to devices like games consoles. Otherwise, all connections are efficiently arranged at the rear with generous spacing between them, which means they can be comfortably reached.
The screen has also been fitted with an upgraded version of LG’s ‘XD Engine’ chip, which only appears to boost black levels. Other features include a sensor that adjusts picture settings according to ambient brightness. Digital TV images appear far more settled, displaying bright, controlled colours with fine detail and depth; typical plasma picture flaws remain inconspicuous. This LG has a great price-to-features ratio since it comes with a screen that’s HD-ready, provides a slot for direct playback of digital photos and MP3s, has a digital tuner with seven-day electronic programme guide, looks great and boasts the latest version of LG’s XD Engine picture processing system at a reasonable price.

LG is a strong believer in integrated high-definition tuners, which means you can receive the HD signal as soon as you plug the screen in. It also means you don't have to invest in a separate HD set-top box and clutter up your living room with another device. Should you choose to use an external source, the 42PX5D also features a range of inputs, including an HDMI connector for future devices. Read more
It's also impressive at this price to note that the deep blacks don't look forced; there's enough greyscale subtlety available to pick out subtle light shifts in even the darkest of corners. And motion looks clean and judder-free. Read more

There is a software bug in this, and many other LG high def TVs. Search on "austrlia channel nine LG" to see planty of articles on it. On my TV, connected to birght house networks cable in Florida, I see the same problem. The video will freeze and the audio continues. The remote and front panel buttons don't work. Unplug and replug and its OK for about an hour. Same problem appears to be across the entire line of HD TVs, but varies in frequency based on which cable... Read more
This display was demonstrated before purchase against more conventional 'name' plasmas and out performed them. Black levels are outstanding and standard def picture on digital feed is excellent. DVD pictures can be stunning. Out Pioneers Pioneer regarding its style - all this for up to 800 quid less (Internet prices of course).
