A tale of swords and souls…and pneumatic breasts For many, Soul Calibur II really encapsulated everything that was great about the excessively theatrical hack 'em up. It struck exactly the right balance, with a combat system as intricate or as basic as you wanted it to be whilst simultaneously packing in a raft of memorable characters. Building on the success of the first game that proved instrumental in shifting millions of Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast, the Soul Calibur... Read more
Now that the HD generation is in full swing, some may be surprised at the dearth of fighting games. Well, we did get Virtua Fighter 5 last year and the next Mortal Kombat and Tekken 6 are on the way, but at least we've now got Soul Calibur IV , the latest in the much vaunted fighting series featuring intense weapon-based comabt. The series is looking to bounce back after the muted reception of Soul Calibur III , particuarly in comparison to its predecessors. The Soul... Read more
Soulcalibur, the best weapon based combat series to ever grace the beat’em up genre is back once again with this fourth iteration of the series. Ever since the first Soulcalibur graced SEGA’s Dreamcast back in 1999 the game has always been a firm favourite with fans. Still, with that all aside, it's well worth getting your hands on a copy to have a good blat with a mate and a few kegs - particularly on the PS3, for now you'll actually have a decent beat-'em-up worth getting good at! Old favourites clash with brand new faces Soul Calibur IV will win no awards for originality, but for looks and lifespan, it's certainly one of the best. With single player modes than can cater separately for the novice and experienced players, plus fairly substantial Character Editing and Creation modes too, this is definitely a high calibre of Calibur. Being a lifelong fan of games such as street fighter...then tekken, i dont actually rate this game at all, as good as this game is.....the lack of combos and things such as juggling gives this game a distinct lack of depth to myself, thus being said...this overall looks and sounds superb, and will no doubt appeal to a lot of people, online play works well and well worth a look in. I read all the previous reviews on this game and was really looking forward to playing. However, after booting up and playing a few quick games was disappointed to discover it a standard beat-em-up. I'm sure if you are into this genre of game then you'll love it but I expected more. (I awarded one extra star just for having Darth Vader in the game - that was pretty cool!) Read more
Fun fighting game. Character editor is decent. Great graphics. The story is a little lackluster though and it seems difficult to do things like the soul crush. Read more
I always have liked the original Soul Calibur games over the other fighting games because of the weapons. This game is over the top for the sheer amount of characters and the addition of Yoda and the Apprentice. The graphics are top notch and game play is very smooth. The arenas do get repetitive and you play the same character quite ofter considering how many there are. Big things this year are the addition of online play and character customization.
