Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots (which commonly abbreviated to MSG4) is a stealth action video game. It is directed by Hideo Kojima (Producer, Director), Shuyo Murata (Writer) and Yoji Shinkawa (Character Designer) and developed by Kojima Productions. This is the seventh title in the Metal Gear series and the first in its fourth generation. This game was released worldwide on June 12, 2008. It is specially developed for PlayStation3 platform. It enables single-player, multi-player online (Metal Gear Online only, downloadable content).

Features

Metal Gear Solid 4 requires the player which named Old Snake to navigate the game world in order to progress, using cunning in addition to traditional combat. Player view as third person view with full camera manipulation, but player is also allowed to play in first-person mode, as well as an over the shoulder view which can be switched from right shoulder to left for corner manoeuvring. The Close Quarters Combat system has been completely revamped. Besides that, there is a camouflage feature in new form called “OctoCamo” which replaces the previous camouflage system. The game is filled with cut scene flashbacks which happened in previous Metal Gear Solid games and how the events or characters relate to the Metal Gear Solid 4. In addition, in this series, Snake is also partnered with a robotic drone, the Metal Gear Mk. II/III, which allows him to communicate with other characters, in addition to the CODEC radio system from previous games. It is also capable of incapacitating enemies using a weak electric shock, as well as providing reconnaissance. Moreover, the developer has also designed new features namely Threat Ring, that shows hills that display nearby enemies. Snake’s health is not a big factor in the game play like normal games; if injured on the battlefield, cuts and burns will remain on his skin. However, the developers wished to avoid putting the stress of maintaining Snake’s health onto the players, so he wears a muscle suit. The story of the game is set in 2014, five years after the “Big Shell Incident” (the events of the Plant Chapter from Metal Gear Solid 2), where it portrays a world where private military companies have replaced world’s standing enemies, fighting proxy wars for business purposes. In general, there are five missions to be accomplished by player namely Act 1 – Liquid Sun; Act 2 – Solid Sun; Act 3 – Third Sun; Act 4 – Twin Suns and Act 5 – Old Sun.

He is an aging and fatigued character that is in the middle of a revolutionary battlefield. The locations in the game include the Middle East and South America. Snake was asked to kill his enemy, Liquid Ocelot. Before he reached that scene, he must get trough a sequence of battlefields by using his legendary stealth abilities and OctoCamo, a high-tech suit. The Octocamo suit is used to avoid detection while he can reach of his target. The new chapter in Hideo Kojima’s legendary strategic spying action series, the characters such as Meryl Silverburgh, Raiden, Hal ‘Otacon’ Emmerich, Eva and Roy Campbell are back in the game. The PS 3 gameplay is featured with a new remote-controlled Metal Gear Mk. II and better Close Quarters Combat system (CQC), and Metal Gear Solid 4 rounds out the Metal Gear saga with a suitable cinematic and fascinating final outing. The new gameplay permits him to flawlessly merge into the environment, which he is capable of stalking his enemies like never before. Viewers like the game especially the Octacamo suit which is available in different colour that suits him with the environment.

To finally see Snake go is certainly a sad time. As a closing to an epic series, this is the fan service we all dreamed of. As a game on its own, it’s stunning in its own right. Ignore the naysayers who claim the story is dull and tedious, they’re just fools. Metal Gear Solid 4 is simply fantastic. Read more

To sum up Snake’s exit is honestly more then we could’ve hoped for. It’s certainly what Sony needed for the PS3 and the constant nods and cheeky references to earlier games will appease the hardcore fans who have been waiting for so long –and that’s ultimately who this game was made for. Like the previous titles, it’s bound to split gamers in half and cause many a debate over its ‘merits’ but that just goes to prove how important the series is to people. Read more

But for all its indulgence, Metal Gear Solid 4 does genuinely throw moment after moment of brilliance at you. In bringing its legacy to a close, the game reveals itself to be a distillation of everything that makes the series what it is. Bold, ambitious and unlike anything else this generation, there lies an experience beyond several oddly disparate parts. A swansong to a breed of cinematic narrative which has finally reached its apex. Read more

First off let me say I’m not just writing this review because I’m forced to by Quinn. No, I’m writing it because I want to. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the 4th major installment in the Metal Gear Series developed and produced by Konami, and by god how amazing this company has proved itself to be in this game. Read more

The Metal Gear Solid series has always divided opinion. In one corner there are the people who dislike the snaking story, long cut-scenes and "interesting" controls. The other comprises those who love the tense gameplay, unusual characterisation and cinematic direction. The latest chapter, Guns of the Patriots is unlikely to move anyone from either camp. After finishing MGS3 and replaying through Subsistence, I really thought Kojima was moving in the right direction. But this is such a huge let-down - unless you're a 13 year old PS3 fanboy. There is about 6 hours of enjoyable gameplay in this title, interspersed with Kojima-babble and self-referential nonsense that serves to alienate the new player and (in my case) bore the fan. How are you supposed to have empathy for characters that are so over-manipulated? There are... Read more

jack3, again you are comparing different games from different genres. Comparing Lego Indy and MGS is bad, but MGS and Guitar Hero? The reason Guitar Hero has a higher score than MGS is more than likely because it was the best in it's genre. I haven't read the GH review myself, but owning it I can say it's a damn good game. The Orange Box is not just a damn fine game, it is several fine games. You have one of the best, if not the best puzzle games in Portal, one of the... Read more

Metal Gear Sold 4. Guns Of The Patriots. Ireland: 55 Euro. My thoughts on this game varied from great too bad, I had suitable mixed emotions about Metal Gear Solid when it first appeared on my local game shelve. The graphics are unbelievable, the action intense, and storyline dramtic and gripping. It does detach itself from the previous titles though, it almost feels like a different game compared to the previous Metal Gear Solids. Stealth isn't really a factor in this... Read more

This is right up there with Assassin's Creed and Halo 3 as the worst games I have ever wasted my money on. I am so sick of these boring, self-indulgent film clips and feeble attempts to craft a story. If they spent half as much time on developing the controls and weapons as they did on stupid cut scenes, the game would be a whole lot better. Read more

Having played through Metal Gear Solid’s 1 to 3, i was looking forward to the next-gen fourth installment. I was not disappointed! I won’t bore you with the story (its pretty complicated stuff), but some elements of the gameplay from the previous games have been tweaked. Firstly, stealth is no longer essential, as you can go at it all guns blazing (however stealth does has its benefits) if you wish. Another thing is the ’SolidEye’ - an eye patch snake wears, that...
