The Witcher

The Witcher is a computer role-playing game for the PC developed by CD Projekt RED STUDIO. It is based on the book series with the same name by Polish author, Andrzej Sapkowski. It was released in Europe on October 26, 2007 and in the US on October 30, 2007.

Features

The game is set in a medieval fantasy world and it follows the story of Geralt, one of the few remaining ‘witchers’, traveling monster hunters for hire, gifted with unnatural powers. At the opening of the game, Geralt of Rivia is given the task of curing the daughter of King Foltest of a curse which causes her to transform into a feral monster. After curing her, a few years pass and Geralt is transported to the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen by fellow witchers who had discovered him unconscious in a field. Geralt remembers almost nothing of his life. The game’s story is separated into five acts, each representing a different area and distinct set of quests. Through the player’s choices and actions, Geralt redefines character relationships and navigates political intrigue in the changing landscape of Temeria. Players ultimately determine the ending of the game through choices that affect the plot progression. Throughout the game, players can play from one of two top-down perspectives, in which case the mouse is used to control everything, or it can be played from an over-the-shoulder view. Players are closer to the ingame combat but have limited visibility. Players are offered three fighting styles, quick heavy and group style. Players can switch between styles at any point in the game. Also, players can create potions to increase health or endurance regeneration, among other things. The game uses a time-delayed decision-consequence system, where repercussions of players’ decisions will make themselves apparent in plot devices in the game’s later acts. This game is powered by a modified version of the Aurora Engine and it also features a TAGES copy protection system which can quietly and undetectably sabotage the game content to make it unwinnable by making certain key non-player characters disappear permanently.

The Witcher provides some deep, interesting and reasonably mature RPG action. A touch more maturity, complexity in choices, and polish could have taken the game a little further, but overall, if you're looking for a great title in this genre, you would be doing yourself a favour to investigate what The Witcher has to offer. Well-intentioned clickety combat aside, The Witcher doesn't offer much the dedicated role-player won't have already seen elsewhere, but that's not such a bad thing. CD Projekt has taken time-tested elements from across the fantasy-RPG spectrum and tied them to a solidly crafted story that includes elements of racial discord, religious fanaticism and sexual promiscuity in its adults-only mix. Admittedly, these elements are rather crudely introduced and are handled with a... Read more

Fans of the old Baldur's Gate games will feel right at home straight away. As with Neverwinter Nights 2, you can play the game from an old-school top down perspective, giving you a wide view of the environments that you are travelling through. A quick mouse click will have you travelling where you need to go in a pretty precise fashion. But for us, it's far more impressive to play with the third-person up close and personal viewpoint. It gets you in the thick of the... Read more

First off I want to mention a really important issue that you should consider before buying The Witcher, while it is a fantastic game there is a problem from the get go. The problem being that the game is highly UNSTABLE, it crashes quicker than it loads. You can be playing for maybe about 15-20 minutes and then it crashes, it can crash when you go to save your progress or just check your inventory or even just moving from cutscene to playing again...The website has made... Since when is a 7 a bad score? We rate on a 0-10 system, where a 7 is "The game is good and well above the average in this genre. There are no distinct weaknesses.", and an 8 is "This game is really good, and is easily recommendable to persons that do not usually use similar products (an example: flight simulators). The product is above average on many points, and has no real weaknesses. " I would not automatically recommend this game to people who don't usually play... Read more
