The Western Digital My Book World Edition is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) server that has total storage capacity of 500 GB with 7200 rpm spindle speed. It comes with one USB port that allows for connecting additional USB devices such as USB drives and printers for network sharing. The high-speed Gigabit LAN port allows for gigabit network speeds when transferring data, music, video and other files over the LAN.

The Western Digital My Book World Edition provides user with remote access and file sharing ability, along with its 500GB single-drive solution for network backup and sharing, which is perfect for home and office use that requires a simple, flexible and advanced storage solution for easy sharing of files, pictures, music and videos. The My Book World Edition sits vertically and is designed to resemble a book. The edges of the "pages" are marked with a series of dots and dashes (Morse code) that do double duty as a passive cooling feature. On the spine of the "book" sits a power button surrounded by two blue LED rings. The inner ring is a capacity gauge, while the outer ring flashes to indicate activity. The back edge of the NAS server houses a Gigabit Ethernet port for connecting to your router, a USB port for attaching an external hard drive, a power port; a pinhole reset button, and a Kensington lock. Setting up the drive is simple by just connecting the drive to a LAN port on your router using an Ethernet cable, connect the power cable, and plug it in. Western Digital My Book World Edition features Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet for its Data link protocol. The Gigabit network connectivity enables user to transfer files via the LAN at 1000Mbps. The high-speed LAN interface allows for high network performance where users make use of technology-sensitive business applications such as instant file sharing and multimedia applications. It is equipped with one Ethernet 1000Base-T - RJ-45 and one high-speed USB 2.0 ports (4 PIN USB Type A). The My Book World Edition is compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, along with a minimum processor type of 500 MHz. It also comes with drivers & utilities software and EMC Retrospect Express. Western Digital has partnered with a remote-access software company called MioNet, where by the product allows user to access remote drives and PCs as if those devices were on a local network which is similar to GoToMyPC and LogMeIn. MioNet has created a customized version for the MyBook World Edition that works similarly to its own offering. When you first install the drive, the included CD will be used to install the software on the PC. Then, on each subsequent PC from which you would like to remotely access your MyBook World Edition, your work PC, for example you will need to install the software as well (each drive comes with five free installation licenses, available from MioNet’s site) and indicate that you are adding the PC to an existing network. On each remote PC, you will have the My Book Anywhere Access control pane, where you will see the available devices on your network. The Western Digital My Book World Edition dimension measures in at 2.2-inch in width, 6.8-inch in height and 5.6-inch in depth, while it weights in at 2.6 pounds. It also comes with an external Power adapter, with voltage requirement of AC 120/230 V (50/60 Hz) plus it has a minimum operating temperature of 41 °F and maximum operating temperature of 95 °F. The NAS storage is manufactured by Western Digital Corp.
