The Canon MP520 printer has a simple and sleek design that also comes with a low price tag. The internal part lays 4 neatly arranged replaceable ink cartridges from Canon’s latest ChromaLife 100 range. The blend of pigment-based black ink with dye-based cyan, magenta and yellow inks enables fast high-quality document printing and desirable photo output. The speed is absolutely amusing. In a test conducted by Techradar, the speed is absolutely amazing when running both mono and coloured documents. Text and graphics quality is fantastic, provided with crisp font edges and solid colour performance. The low running cost is a real bonus for all users, making it a budget purchase based on its price. Users liked the dual paper input trays, the bottom one for standard paper and the rear tray for photo or special function papers. Scanning quality is well above average. Reviewers from CNET noted that it also comes with memory card slots and a PictBridge port. Professionals can even choose the manual control of photo edits. However, some said that the contrast and colour depth generated seems to be lacking. Other shortcomings include the PictBridge port that does not support storage devices, slow scanning speeds and difficulty in transferring images from a memory card to your PC. The bottom line is, the Canon Pixma MP520 doesn’t offer all the bells and whistles found on other budget all-in-ones, but it’s a solid device that does the basics right while delivering best-in-class quality.

Overall though, the Canon MP520 is very much the poor relation to the mightier Canon MP610. If you can stretch the budget by another £30 or so, go for the better Canon. Read more
