Review Summary

The Archos 504 is not just another pretty face when it comes to MP3 players and Apple killers. This unit hit the ground running, along with the rest of the 04 series players from Archos. This machine is available with stunning storage capacities of 40 GB, 80 GB, and 160 GB. The size of the display is an unheard of 4.3 inches. The size of the screen is larger than most of today’s digital cameras. The unit itself weighs in at 315 grams. The overall dimensions are 13 x 2.3 x 7.8 (W x D x H) centimeters, mak…

The overall dimensions are 13 x 2.3 x 7.8 (W x D x H) centimeters, making this a relatively bulky unit to manage. Some of the key features such as its digital photo viewer, along with video player capabilities more than make up for the bulkiness.

Some of the other features for the Archos 504 include an external Hard Drive capability, as well as a voice recorder. The unit interfaces with your PC using Hi-Speed USB 2.0 technology allowing for lightning fast transition of your files to and from computer. Some of the formats supported for the 504 include BMP, PNG, and JPEG for your digital prints. WMV, and MPEG’s 2, 3, and 4 are supported for digital video clarity. Sound formats supported include WAV, WMA, AC-3, AAC, and MP3. With so many features and accessories available for this unit, the price must be ridiculously high, right? Actually, the 40GB unit sells for L499, the 80 GB sells for L699 and the 160GB unit is a bit pricey at L850. Then when you factor in the different accessories such as a DVR travel kit, which is around L90. Also, you have different audio and video recording equipment that you can purchase. When you compare the cost of the unit against the performance factors and the different attributes that this unit has, then it is clearly stated that “You get what you pay for.”

Archos's 04 series includes a model for everyone. The midrange 504 may not be the thinnest gadget around (it has a 2.5-inch drive inside), but it can store a huge amount of data. Available in 40GB (£195), 80GB (£329) and an amazing 160GB (£395) capacities, the 504 fills in the storage void left by the 404 , the 404 Camcorder, the 604 and the 604 Wi-Fi , which all max out at 30GB. Measurable bulk and pricey 160GB version aside, the do-it-all 504 is an impressive AV... Read more

I was looking for something to watch movies on and listen to music as I went travelling, and this certainly fit the bill. The device is larger than a typical MP3 player, it comes under the PVP (Personal Video Player) title, but the trade off is worth it for the screen size. On many occasions I had five or six people sat around watching a movie on it, so it's not just a personal device, as it can be enjoyed by a group of people; something that an iPod would struggle to... I was given the archos as present and was initally disappointed that I had to download additional plug-ins for the cinema pack in order to watch certain formats, as I believe the prodouct itself to be quite pricey. However, after using it very frequently, it is now the one gadget that I do not travel without. It is easy to transfer files on to it & has a decent battery life in comparison to a lot of other products, I can use mine for a good 4 hours before the battery... Read more

Compared to an iPod, the Archos is an inferior product; the file formats are very limited, navigation is clunky, management of files (on PC) a pain and transfer from PC to device a chore. However it has one massive advantage; the screen is a great size with superb resolution. So if movies are your preference, then this is the device of choice until Apple comes along with an iPod with a decent screen size and a reasonable price (for enough storage). Read more
