Review Summary

As the latest hard drive iPod, the Apple Classic comes with its extra capacity and metal casing which is a good extension to the series. The iPod Classic has a shiny, curved chrome-like backplate attached to an anodised aluminium sheet that curves gently forward before forming a flat space in which the display and clickwheel are mounted. Offering an impressive resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, the Classic’s 2.5” display beats most of its rivals by providing a much better view. According to Reghardware.co.uk, Apple claims the 80GB battery life comes in at up to 30 hours of music playback and 5 hours video. The 160GB, presumably thanks to a bigger battery, scores 40 hours and 7 hours respectively. Buyers will benefit from many of its improvements including the search, the extra info, and the new-style Settings menu upgrades. Classic’s users are happy that the player covers wide range of video formats including H.264, plus M4V, MP4 and MOV. The model also got some complaints that the silver model falls flat although the black version is spot on. It has been said that the player is unable to send video content to a TV unless connected to a new, Apple-authorized dock or video cable. The user interface performance is also inconsistent. Some users suggested that the lack of DivX support is grating, and most video will require re-encoding before it will sit happily with iTunes. Getting videos into iPod remains a task fraught with difficulty for non savvy users. Despite these drawbacks, the Classic is surprisingly rated as fair value for money.
