More traffic information?

We have our 'For Life Traffic subscription' but it doesn't seem to be live. In other words, all the roads, like motorways near large cities, that you expect to be busy are coloured red. Often, during certain hours of the day, those roads are actually clear. We get the impression that all we are seeing is a map loaded into our Sat Nav and it isn't really live at all. We want to know more - i.e. advance news of any large, but not usual, queues on motorways. Or long-standing major roadworks, like those around Hindhead. Does Garmin offer a real life traffic feed that we would need to pay extra to see?
