Pikmin 2’s gameplay revolves around using different combinations of Pikmin to retrieve various treasures from the planet’s surface. The treasures can range from a Duracell battery to a Dannon yoghurt lid. Players must face different types of obstacles and enemies to retrieve the different treasures. In addition to this, players must consider which colors of Pikmin and how many of those colors will be needed to complete a certain task. The video game allows up to 100 Pikmin to be played at any given time. Players are allotted a time of one day to play and this equals to about 15 minutes in real time. Among the tasks players may be given are defeating enemies, building bridges, destroying walls, or removing other obstacles. In addition to this, players can find caves among the landscape, apart from the usual above-ground areas. In Pikmin 2, caves can contain multiple treasures and enemies spread across multiple sub-levels. Sub-level layouts and placement of the enemies as well as the treasure is randomly done, therefore, it changes every time the player enters a cave. The game is designed to save after each sub-level has been completed. If the layout of a sub-level is unfavorable to the player, players can begin the sub-level again, and it will have a new, possibly more favorable, layout. Time does not pass above ground during cave exploration and players do not have access to Pikmin Onions during their time in the cave. The game has two modes, single player and multiplayer.
