Sony Playstation 2

The PlayStation 2 or the PS2 is a sixth-generation video game console manufactured by Sony, the successor to the PlayStation, and the predecessor to the PlayStation 3 as part of the PlayStation series of consoles. Its development was announced in March 1999 and it was released in March 4, 2000 in Japan.

Features

The PS2 can read both CDs and DVDs and is backward compatible with PlayStation games. There are three case designs for the Playstation 2; these are the original case design, the slim line and the PSX. The Playstation 2 runs on a 64-bit CPU called the “Emotion Engine” which is clocked at 294MHz. It has a 32MB Direct Rambus or RDRAM system memory and 3.2 gigabytes per second memory bus bandwidth. The Playstation 2’s main processor is a 64 bit MIPS R5900 CPU core which works together with a FPU coprocessor or one Floating Point Multiply Accumulator and one Floating Point Divider. In addition to that, the vector units in the Playstation 2 consist of VU0 and VU1, 32-bit, at a speed of 150 MHz. VU0 is typically used for polygon transformations, physics and other gameplay type things while VU1 is used for polygon transformations, lighting and other visual based calculations. The Playstation 2 is also equipped with a 16KB cache memory. Furthermore, the graphic processing unit used is a “Graphic Synthesizer” which is clocked at 147 MHz. This allows the Playstation 2 to offer a 256 x 224 to a 1280 x 1024 video output resolution with 16 pixel pipelines. The Playstation 2 is also comes attached with a 4MB Embedded DRAM video memory bandwidth at 48 gigabytes per second which allows a texture and frame buffer bandwidth of 9.6GB/s and 38.4GB/s respectively. The Playstation 2 supports PlayStation 2 format CD-ROM, PlayStation format CD-ROM, Compact Disc Audio, PlayStation 2 format DVD-ROM, DVD Video, DVD-9, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW.
