It can also play DVD-RAM, DVD-R (Video/VR in single or dual-layer), DVD+R (single or double layer), DVD-RW/+RW, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-DA, and SVCD. It can decode JPEG, MP3, and DivX.
The recorder comes with integrated terrestrial digital and analogue TV tuner supporting live TV pause, scene chaptering, and high-speed dubbing. With support from Electronic Program Guide (GUIDE Plus+) information, it features Series Recording that will record programs in a series. It also has the capability to recognize when a program has been split such as for news broadcast. The front panel has an iLink (FireWire) input that enables transferring DV camcorder footage. Built into the recorder are nine quality presets but the user can also use one of 34 manual quality settings to record in bitrates ranging from 0.75Mbps to 15Mbps. Depending on the quality, the recorder can fit between one and 17 hours of recording on a dual-layer DVD or 340 hours on the hard disk. The user can do some editing such as deleting parts of the recording using A-B Erase, divide the recordings, as well as combine chapters. When using the hard disk or DVD-RW/-R in VR mode, the Playlist feature allows user to combine and arrange the clip sequences without affecting the original recording. Depending on disc type, the recordings and edited playlists can be copied from the hard disk to DVD, or vice versa, at up to 6x speed. For output, the RDR-HXD870 supports HDMI output at 720p and 1080i, component video, two Scarts for RGB input and output, and a coaxial digital audio for Dolby Digital and DTS sound. It can also upscale normal and recorded DVDs to 1080p.
The recorder has a USB port that enables transfer of MP3 or JPEG files to the built-in hard disk. The files can be organized, edited, and played using the Jukebox and Photo Album features as well as recorded onto DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. In addition, the recorder has a PictBridge socket that allows the user to print out the pictures to a compatible printer. With BRAVIA Theatre Sync, the player can be used in sync with Sony BRAVIA Televisions.

Does anybody know what the code D--- or 0--- on the front panel means? There's no picture or sound - the lights are on but it seems there's no-one home!
