Philips DVP3980

The Philips DVP3980 is a DVD player and recorder that supports DVD playback with 1080p HDMI upconversion. It measures 210 mm x 37 mm x 360 mm.

Features

The Philips DVP3980 can play virtually any disc, including CDs, VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs, DVD +R, DVD –R, DVD +RW and DVD –RW. Besides that it also features a 12 bit/ 108 MHz video processing for sharp natural images. The 12-bit video DAC is a superior digital-to-analogue converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colour resulting in a more vibrant and natural pictures. In addition to that, it also features a 192 kHz/ 24 bit audio DAC that enhances analogue sound input to enable you to have an accurate representation of the original curves. Together with a 24 bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form to give a much richer audio reproduction. Other than that, the Philips DVP3980 also features progressive scan component video for optimized image quality. Progressive scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time, thus a full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. For added convenience, the Philips DVP3980 also incorporates EasyLink for easy control of connected devices via HDMI CEC, thus letting you control multiple devices with one remote. It uses HDMI CEC industry-standard protocol to share functionality between devices through the HDMI cable. With one touch of a button, you can operate all your connected HDMI CEC enabled equipment simultaneously. Other than that, the Philips DVP3980 also brings video to life, featuring HDMI digital output for easy connection with only one cable. HDMI is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multi channel audio, thus delivering perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. Besides that, it also features high definition JPEG playback for images in true resolution to allow you to view your digital pictures in absolute clarity without loss of quality or detail. The Philips DVP3980 runs on a power consumption of less than 10 Watts when in operation and less than 1.0 Watts when put on standby mode.

There was a time when 1080p upscaling was only found on expensive high-end DVD players, but now it's as common as progressive scan or MP3 playback. Upscaling players are getting cheaper all the time, which is great news considering the growing number of Full HD flat-panel TV sets on the market, as it means you can prolong the life of your DVD collection without having to pay through the nose. When I moved to University I thought it would be a good idea to buy a new T.V and DVD player. As technology is moving fast I decided to buy this Philips DVP3980 DVD player for £49.99 From Currys. What is so special about this DVD player? Well apart from being cheap, this Philips DVD player has an HDMI connection on its back, which enables the DVD player to upscale the resolution to a real 1080p high definition (HD). The TV I bought had 720p, therefore the DVD player up... Read more

I was looking to replace my DVD player with one that would also play my DVDs from the UK. I read some reviews and picked this player up for around $40 at my local super store. I have had this player for 6 months now. I have to say this is a wonderful player that has the same functions as players that cost many times this. I have had no issues with the player at all. I was very pleased to see that with a setting change (see below), the player is able to play DVDs from any... Read more
