Despite a 6-megapixel sensor, there's nothing wrong with the D40's picture, which come so close to the quality provided by 10-megapixel SLRs that it could be hard to spot the difference. But while the new control interface looks great, it's rather sluggish and fiddly to use. I have used SLR cameras for many years. In fact I used to specialized in Black & White Photography. My first digital camera was point and shoot model. After reading all the camera reviews about DSLR... Read more
The D40 may have been around for a while now, but if you’re new to digital SLR photography or are simply counting the pennies, then this camera needs a very close look. Its performance far exceeds it seemingly low specification and it handles well. Read more
Don't run away with the idea that the D40 is a dumbed down D50, mind. The image optimisation settings have been extended to include useful Vivid Plus and Black-and-White modes, and there are the same in-camera retouching options as those found on the more expensive D80. Read more
The Nikon D40 is an attempt to make DSLR photography accessible to more people than ever before, making it one of the most important models in the company's history. Crucially Nikon haven't simply concentrated on reducing the price by reducing the features. The D40 is an almost perfect DSLR for those first time DSLR buyers on a more modest budget, anyone who wants a compact and lightweight DSLR or those moving across from film or trading up from a compact model. Image quality, the handling, responsiveness and features strike a great balance for its target market and you should not be put off by the 6-megapixel sensor as there’s plenty of detail here, so the D40 really should be high up on your wants list if your about... Nikon D40 is my first DSLR. I am absolutely delighted with it. Very easy to use and not too heavy either. Have bought a 55-200mm lens already and am very tempted to get the 70-300mm as I am keen on bird/wildlife photography. Would highly recommend this camera. Read more
Im oved over to this from a being a Kodak user and find it much better although not as compact. Standard attachments underneath for tripod use. The case that comes along with it is nice and has plenty of room for wee extras. Read more
I went digital much too soon! Having owned (over 30 years) a Nikkormat FT2, F301 and F601 with 35-70 and 70-210 Nikkors I was used to excellent images every time. Three years ago the Nikon D70 was £1000 so I bought an Olympus C8080WZ for £550. The 8Mp sensor is bigger than on compacts but still suffered noise at 400 asa. It is also very very slow. Press the shutter button and whistle a tune while it works everything out before actually taking the picture. This was very... Read more
