It's practically impossible to review the Nikon D700 as a standalone camera, so many features and functions harking back to the earlier D300, the D3, or both. It's inevitable perhaps that it doesn't quite have the initial impact on the senses of its two predecessors as, by and large, we now know what to expect. If we're asking what the D700 misses, we can point again to the lack of a built-in sensor-shift image stabilisation system, which just forces users to invest in a... Read more

The D700 is going to be popular, as indeed the EOS 5D was when it appeared on the scene. It will sell to top-end amateurs for sure, but this is a camera that professionals in all manner subjects will use too. Remember, the D700 uses the same innards as the D3, and our initial tests confirm results in the same awesome picture quality. At the moment the D700 is on the market for £2000 body only, but already we are seeing some retailers sneaking this down by £100. In... Read more

Have to admit I am impressed with this Nikon D700 camera (purchased after some time pondering reviews etc). Ok not quite a D3. But close enough and a lot lower cost. Nice to buy something you don't regret buying! Read more
I bought this camera to replace my aging Canon Eos 20d. The Canon had some features I liked, but I was disappointed in the focusing performance. After considering all options, I selected the D700 for two reasons: 1. I suspected that the focusing performance would be good. 2. I was intrigued by the high ISO performance. Results: 1. Focusing is INCREDIBLE. 2. Up to ISO 3200, you really cannot tell that the ISO is high. Sure, there is some increase in noise, but it is very... Read more
Overall a great camera from Nikon, and a good way to find out why the pro's use this sort of gear. I cant really say much other than that. I do however find the optional battery grip has a rather cheap feel about it, but i'm not reviewing that here.... Read more
I've been shooting since the film days with Nikon F-4, so I've invested in 5 lens, which I still use today, And I didn't want to use DX cameras, which would make wide angle lens pretty useless. So I waited to buy a digital SLR, until an affordable full frame came out, and this was the closest thing to happen. D3 is great, except it costs around $4500, so when the D700 dropped to $2300, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get behind the camera once more. Everything... Read more
This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body Only (Electronics) I compared the Canon 5D MkII/24-105mm f4 with the D700/24-70mm f2.8 & came very, very close to buying the 5D which would have meant sticking with Canon, not having to buy a RAW converter & complimenting my G10 with possibility of sharing flash guns. It was very close - I had to leave the shop & think over my choice. I ended up reading a couple of mags that reviewed both cameras & stuck to my... Read more
