An excellent value-for-money SLR with impressive image quality and handling. Picture quality is comparable to some of the £2,000+ pro SLRs on the market and there are enough new features and improvements in performance to justify an upgrade from the old D200 if you're tempted. Powerful enough for the pros, but not too daunting for enthusiastic amateurs. Read more

While pictures are stunning, there's no getting away from the fact that while to a professional the Nikon D300 is a budget buy, to the average consumer it's a wallet-battering investment. Still, you get what you pay for and, having also taken the D300 along to a studio shoot as part of our test, we can vouch that its results and workhorse-like reliability. Simply superb. Read more

As I've remarked before, I get to see and use a lot of digital cameras in the course of my job, from the cheapest budget compacts to the very best professional DSLRs. As a life-long camera nerd I couldn't be happier with this arrangement, but there is a drawback. The cameras that I review are loaned to me by the manufacturers; I keep them for a few weeks, and then I have to give them back. The problem with this is that sometimes I find a camera that's so good I really... Read more

The D300 is my first DSLR. I bought it because it combined the three things I wanted from a DSLR: Build quality with weather sealing, reliable auto focus and good image quality above 800 ISO. In fact it provides more than that because it is built like an ergonomic tank with almost everything falling to hand or finger with ease. Only the `Mode' button is a little awkward. The autofocus has proven to be everything I hoped, distinguishing similar coloured objects in good... Read more
