It’s easy for pros to sneer at any line’s entry-level offering, but this is a superb starter DSLR, especially for anyone making the leap from a compact. Be aware, however, that Canon doesn’t own this market segment anymore; if you can get a good deal on a rival, take it. Read more

Anyone choosing the Canon EOS 1000D as their first DSLR is best advised to opt for both camera and 18-55mm image stabilised zoom, as tested, for just £80 more than the body-only price. As typical with a DSLR you'll have to provide your own memory card. With the demise of the 400D, the 1000D is currently the least expensive way to buy into the comprehensive Canon system and therefore comes recommended. Read more

The Canon EOS 1000D is the best camera for novices in DSLR photography. It incorporates all of the most recent technological innovations, like Live View, an anti-dust system and image stabilisation in the kit lens. But despite its plethora of features, a 10-million-pixel sensor, high image quality and a fast autofocus system, the camera is still reasonably priced. Read more

But while Canon's used the opportunity to improve on the old EOS 400D in many areas, the new camera does have a cheaper feel Read more

A superb piece of kit. This is my third Canon camera purchased over several years and my first DSLR. The styling, the functionality and the lightweight construction are pretty much faultless in my view. The Amazon service has also been excellent. I can thoroughly recommend this camera to the serious amateur photographer. Read more
