Review Summary

For a camcorder that easy to use and carry, the Panasonic NV-GS180 makes the short list. This model is the successor to the mid-range NV-GS150 with many similar specifications. The three 1/6" 0.8Mp (megapixel) CCDs, provides realistic 2.3Mp still images at 1,760x1,320. You will find an excellent assortment of features that belie its pricepoint; jacks for microphones and headphones, top loading design plus the accessory shoe located on the top of the unit. Unfortunately this model does not feature the flash, which eliminates its use as a camera in most cases. However the video quality is exceptional for this category. The shutter, video gain and iris settings are available by using the joystick located at the back of the camcorder, but the five auto-exposure modes, must be accessed through the menu.

As you would expect of a 3CCD camcorder with its superior light refraction ability, the image detail improves over that of a single chip, however even though the camcorder responded well in most situations, the electronic image stabilization loses effectiveness in low light filming. In addition, this feature cannot be used in widescreen mode. Colours are rich and there is good detail, with image resolution that fares equally well in this compact camcorder design. Making a purchase decision based purely on the feature array, it may be difficult to gauge how the Panasonic NV-GS180 differs from its predecessor, beside the fact that it doesn’t carry the same weight or design, however the video quality is where you will see the difference, even though it lacks the integrated lens cap and flash. This is the camcorder for those who are looking for a camcorder that delivers a balanced combination of auto and manual features that results in stills and video footage of good quality.

The Panasonic NV-GS180 doesn't seem like a huge step forward from its NV-GS150 predecessor; it's a touch shorter and lighter, and misses the flash and integrated lens cap, but otherwise offers very similar features. Nonetheless, assuming street prices match the company's £449 recommended retail price, this is exceptional value for such good video quality. Read more

Panasonic has not made it easy this year. Their entire 3-CCD line was revamped and scaled down, making them more affordable, but at the loss of a lot of features. The PV-GS180 replaces the PV-GS150, which sold for $699, one hundred dollars more than the PV-GS180. With the price cut came the loss of a hot accessory shoe, Read more
