Looks great and is a very capable performer, but this still isn't the finished Blu-ray article we're looking for Read more
Sony's high-spec Blu-ray deck fires 1080p pictures to your TV at 24 frames per second and unlike the next model down (BDP-S300) it supports 7.1-channel Dolby True HD, DTS HD and Dolby Digital Plus. The S500 looks gorgeous with a motorised front panel that slides down at the push of a button, and picture quality is staggeringly sharp and vibrant. Read more
A few frustrating absences such as the Blu-ray 1.1 profile and DTS-HD Master Audio are more than made up for with supreme HD picture quality and Dolby TruHD along with DTS-HD High Resolution audio. Read more
The Sony BDPS500B is an excellent sonic performer and will upscale your DVD collection — but it's outshone by cheaper players for Blu-ray playback. Read more
There is no compelling reason to buy this player over a PlayStation 3: it's too expensive, doesn't support profile 1.1 or 2.0, and costs more than pretty much every Blu-ray player on the market. The picture and sound quality are, however, excellent, which makes it a good player with a silly price tag Read more
This unit was purchased as I was told that it could play DTS Master audio, this turns out not to be true. It can not output pure bitstream so my Denon 3808 only gets a DTS surround signal, not the higher codec DTS Master. It does fine with Dolby TrueHD, but not DTS Master. Other than that I love it, despite being even slower to open, load or play than previous generations from Sony... Read more
the image quality is the best i've ever seen. it was very easy to hook up, plays all my old dvds. only negative is that the load time is a little slow but all of the blu-rays ARE LIKE THAT. definitely recommend. [...] Read more
I bought this unit 2 months ago and have had problems with it. Although easy to use, the first unit I had had difficulty with dark still images; little white horizontal lines appeared. The unit was incredibly slow to respond to commands from the remote. It was returned to Sony and Sony performed a firmware update. Obviously, not diagnostic was done, same problem occured. The store changed the unit. Just recently, the remote stopped working. I have to go replace it. The... Read more
Sony has gone down hill, overrated-overpriced. Buy a Panasonic! My unit loaded slowly and broke so many times (2 time in less than 6 months) Sony wanted $140 every time to repair. Their helps centers have people who barely speak English and cant help at all. Were very rude to me and when I explained to them the repair needs, they were rude. This unit promised a lot, cost a lot and int truth is not as good as the Samsung or Panasonic models for 1/2 the price. This unit... Read more
