  1. Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray Player

Not so long ago we tested the Panasonic DMP-BD35 and were quite frankly blown away by its superb hi-def picture performance and comprehensive feature list, which were made all the more remarkable by its reasonable price tag. Read more

As with every other Blu-ray player I've tested, the BD55 doesn't measure up to the PS3 in its speed, but it's better than most dedicated players. The responsiveness of the PS3 is hard to beat, but if you need multichannel analog outputs, the PS3 isn't even in contention. Other notable flaws with the gaming system include its crop-duster-loud CPU fan and having to use an aftermarket IR remote. The BD55 is a step up in performance from every other Blu-ray player I've... Read more

Making up for the main problems found in previous generations of Panasonic Blu-ray players, the BD55 is an excellent all-rounder that it's difficult to fault on any point. Read more

The bottom line: The Panasonic DMP-BD55 is the best standalone Blu-ray we've tested and it's a good choice for those with older receivers, but most people will get the same performance out of the cheaper DMP-BD35. Read more

This is my first BluRay player and I could not be happier. Prior to making a purchase my only HD experience was via Verizon's FIOS service, which is a very good service IMO. But the quality of the picture (which is still very good) can't hold a candle to this BR player. I had done extensive research and this seemed to be the player for me based on my non-HDMI AVR requirements. Picture/Audio quality is tremendous and DVD playback is just fine. Speed is a bit slow compared... Read more

I choose this product b/c of all the great reviews I got off cnet. They weren't lying. It's great. It's better than using a PS3 b/c it has some audio options that the PS3 doesn't and it's truely lossless. The PS3 uses PCM to bit stream conversion... not good. That won't matter unless you have a high quality surround sound system. Also, you can get the bd35 and it does nearly everything the 55 does and it's $100 cheaper. I'm a stickler for high quality electronics so I... Read more

  3. Terrible Junk - long LOADING times - terrible

Whoever writes these long reviews on this site must work for Panasonic. This unit is terrible. Takes forever to load a DVD (average 2-3 min). Press Eject - it takes 30-40 sec. to eject a disk. Remote funcions responses are slow, no way to get to main menu quick, FWD buttons are slow responsive, it freezed and went crazy trying to load CRANK 2 blueray. I read a lot of good reviews before I bought this unit. Decided to go with Panasonic because I read the Sony units load... Read more

Pros: The best Picture and Sound I've seen on a Blu-ray player yet. Very fast and quiet. BD-Live and Firmware update(s). Upconversion is one of the best I've seen. Design and build quality is good and slim. Blue LED in front looks nice when room is dark. Neatly hidden playback controls. SD-card slot. Cons: Price is a bit expensive. Slow load times as with any blu-ray player, still the fastest I've seen though. No wireless or USB. Can't play certain region DVD's. Review:... Read more

  5. Better Blu Ray Player

    Reviewer: PriceGrabber
    27 January 2009

This replaced an older Philips player and performs a lot better at a cheaper price although it is still high. Internet update is a plus over download to CD. Speed still seems a bit slow. Sound capabilities set it apart from cheaper models. The upscaling of regular DVDs is very good. SD card slot good - too bad not multicard (Philips had this). Cheap plastic latch on card slot cover broke but can be glued back - poor design. Panasonic brand has been reliable for me. Read more
