Onkyo TX-SR705

The Onkyo TX-SR705 incorporates Advanced Speaker Array, processes 1080p video and high-resolution audio via HDMI, provides upconversion of videos and also features Audyssey MultEQ XT for room acoustics correction.

Features

The Onkyo TX-SR705 has been designed to comply with the requirements of THX Select2. This certification means that Onkyo TX-SR705 is duitable as a home theather whereby the viewing distance from the screen to the seating area is around 10 -12 feet and the room size is no larger than 2000 cubic feet. Its technology includes Advanced Speaker Array (ASA) that digitally reconfigures surround speakers for three listening modes ; movies, music and gaming. The THX certification also includes A/V receiver’s amplification characteristics. The Onkyo TX-SR705 has been proven to deliver 12.5 amperes of peak current for its front channels and 6.2 amperes for its surrounds. In addition to its surround system, it features video and high resolution audio processed via High Definition Multimedia Interface(HDMI 1.3a). It incorporates three HDMI inputs, that enables receiving and swtiching the high definition components- Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD players, satellite and cable boxes, media centres and gaming consoles, all connected via cable digital connection to an HDTV. In addition to this the HDMI delivers high-definition audio formats -Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio which is processed by Onkyo TX-SR705’s decoder. The formats provide for a reproduction in TrueHD and Master Audio. It also provides a greater bandwidth of up to 1080p and 36-bit Deep colour and high frame rates. The Onkyo TX-SR705 HDMI input receives digital videos from HDMI enabled components, connected to a single-cable output which connects to a display device with HDMI or DVI connection. It also upconverts analog signals to HDMI, to ensure that all connected video sources will be delivered through one cable. In the event, the display lacks HDMI capability, the HD-quality component video connections can be used which will cover S-video and composite video sources. In the effort to support progressive scan, the Onkyo TX-SR705 features a deinterlacing chip with Faroudja DCDi Edge (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing), this feature eliminates video artifacts from HDTV images. Besides this it features an in built distortion eliminator, the Audyssey MultEQ XTm which helps reduce distortion in home theaters. This technology, detects speakers, sets levels, delays and crossovers, whilst measuring room volume. The receiver interface is used and takes up to eight measurements around the listening zone and uses high-resolution equalization filters for satellites and subwoofers. The Audyssey MultEQ incorporates frequency response and time domain across the entrie listening zone which provides a balanced and natural sound.

The documentation is bad. However the design for setting it up is very common sense. Features that are usually hard to set up, like mic adjusted auto equalizer are easy. The instructions are step by step via the TV screen. Read more

The receiver has very good features (TXH certified, DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, etc.) however these are not at all useful when it is off... The final amplifier developed some problem and now it shuts down after 30 minutes and a lot of crackling sound in one of the channels. The repair center "fixed" it once and after less than one month at home it's back with them again already for more than a month. Read more

Now, the SR705 is a beautiful receiver. I got one about a year ago and it was silent and clean running (warm 'though). But about 2 months ago a HUM appeared and remained no matter what I did, including disconnecting EVERYTHING except one speaker and trying every other outlet in the house and turning off everything else in the house. Everything. I sent the unit back for repair and four weeks later it came back from the factory. The HUM was still there, as loud as ever,... Read more
